Purple Coneflower with Southern Blight? Rare but Treatable
Echinacea purpurea
Southern blight is a devastating soilborne fungal disease caused by Athelia rolfsii (formerly Sclerotium rolfsii), affecting over 500 plant species including vegetables, ornamentals, and fruit crops. The fungus survives in soil through resting structures called sclerotia that resemble mustard seeds and can remain viable for years.
ð Symptoms
- âĒ Brown to black lesions on stem near soil line
- âĒ Water-soaked appearance on lower leaves
- âĒ Sudden and permanent wilting of entire plant within days
- âĒ White mycelium radiating from plant base onto soil surface
- âĒ Spherical tan to reddish-brown sclerotia (1-2mm)
- âĒ Yellowing and necrosis of foliage
- âĒ Crown and root rot
- âĒ On fruits: sunken yellow lesions turning water-soaked

ð§ How to Water
Water new plants deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season. Once established (after year one), Echinacea is drought-tolerant and needs watering only during extended dry spells (every 2 weeks or less). Avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk.

Purple Coneflower thrives in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In very hot climates, light afternoon shade is acceptable, but deep shade will cause leggy growth, weak stems, and reduced flowering.
ðŠī Ideal Soil
Prefers average, well-drained soil. Tolerates poor soil, clay, and sandy conditions as long as water does not pool around roots. Does not require rich, fertile soil â overly rich soil leads to weak, floppy stems. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5) is ideal.
