What is Fragile Crassula?
Fragile Crassula (Crassula expansa subsp. fragilis) is a easy-care plant from the Crassulaceae family. Crassula expansa subsp. fragilis is a delicate, creeping succulent native to the rocky, humus-rich slopes of Southern Africa (South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Angola) and Madagascar, where it grows in partial shade at altitudes between 50 and 1800 m. It forms low mats of thin re...
Fragile Crassula grows up to 25cm, spread of 50cm, watering every 14 days, 5°C – 35°C, 30–60% humidity. It is suitable for indoor environments and not safe for pets.
Unlike many tropical plants, Fragile Crassula tolerates watering mistakes. Best for beginners. Without precautions, ingestion can cause irritation in pets. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 28 days.
How to Care for Fragile Crassula?
TLDR: Fragile Crassula needs Bright indirect, watering every 14 days, and temperatures between 5-35°C with 30-60% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Fragile Crassula?
Apply the "soak and dry" method: water thoroughly only when the substrate is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering even further; it is very sensitive to waterlogging, which causes root rot.
How Much Light Does Fragile Crassula Need?
Place in a very bright spot with a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon; a south-facing exposure or a position near a bright window is ideal. Gradually acclimate the plant to full sun to avoid leaf scorch.
What Is the Best Soil for Fragile Crassula?
Use a fast-draining mineral substrate: a mix of 50% potting soil and 50% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite, in a pot with large drainage holes.
What Pot Should You Use for Fragile Crassula?
Shallow and wide terracotta pots, suitable for the plant's mat-forming and creeping growth habit, with plenty of drainage holes.

What Is Fragile Crassula and Where Does It Come From?
Crassula expansa subsp. fragilis is a delicate, creeping succulent native to the rocky, humus-rich slopes of Southern Africa (South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Angola) and Madagascar, where it grows in partial shade at altitudes between 50 and 1800 m. It forms low mats of thin reddish-brown stems covered with tiny, fleshy light green leaves that can turn reddish under intense sunlight. In the wild, it blooms between November and January after the rains, producing small white tubular flowers, sometimes streaked with red, gathered in terminal clusters. The fragile stems root extremely easily upon contact with the soil, which gives the plant its common name.
How to Propagate Fragile Crassula?
Stem cutting
- Avoid overwatering during rooting to prevent rot.
- 1 Cutting the stem
Cut a healthy stem approximately 5 cm long.
- 2 Callousing
Let the cutting dry in a shaded spot for 24 hours until the cut end callouses over.
- 3 Planting
Place the stem on the surface of moist succulent substrate; it will root spontaneously from the nodes in contact with the soil.
Materials needed:
Leaf cutting
- Do not bury the leaf; it must remain on the surface in contact with the substrate.
- 1 Leaf removal
Gently detach a healthy, fleshy leaf from the main stem.
- 2 Drying
Let the leaf dry for one day in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
- 3 Rooting
Lay the leaf on the surface of the substrate; it will form roots and a small rosette at the base.

What Diseases Commonly Affect Fragile Crassula?
TLDR: Fragile Crassula is susceptible to 6 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. They are common pests of houseplants and outdoor plants in mild climates. These sap-sucking insects feed on plant tissue, causing damage, stunted growth, and can lead to plant death if left untreated. They produce sticky honeydew which attracts sooty mold.
Root Rot
Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.
Overwatering
Overwatering occurs when plants receive too much water, depriving roots of oxygen and causing root rot. This environmental stress is one of the most common causes of houseplant death, as waterlogged soil prevents roots from breathing and functioning properly.
Spider Mites
Spider mites are tiny arachnids (less than 1/20 inch long) related to spiders and ticks that feed on plant sap. They thrive in hot, dry conditions and can cause significant damage to ornamental and vegetable plants. During severe infestations, crop losses can reach 14% or higher as these pests disrupt vital plant processes including photosynthesis, carbon dioxide absorption, and transpiration.
Meaning & Symbolism
Resilience and adaptability, due to its ability to regenerate even from small fragments fallen on the ground.
