How Often Should You Water Spikerush?
The substrate must be constantly saturated with water; in an aquarium, ensure good water circulation around the stems.
How Much Light Does Spikerush Need?
In insufficient light, the plant stretches upwards and loses its ability to form a dense carpet.
What Is the Best Soil for Spikerush?
It requires a fine-grained substrate rich in iron and nutrients, ideally with added clay.

What Is Spikerush and Where Does It Come From?
Eleocharis, commonly known as spikerush, is a genus of perennial marsh plants belonging to the sedge family (Cyperaceae). They are characterized by their leafless, tubular, grass-like stems that grow in dense clumps. In aquascaping, they are very popular for creating underwater lawns, while in nature they inhabit pond banks and wetlands. The plant spreads via underground rhizomes and produces small flower spikelets at the tips of its stems.
How to Propagate Spikerush?
Division of clumps
- Before planting, trim the stems to a height of 2 cm to encourage the plant to invest energy into rooting.
- Use fine tweezers for planting in an aquarium.
- 1 Removing the plant
Carefully pull the mature clump from the substrate to avoid damaging the root system.
- 2 Dividing
Using your fingers or sharp scissors, divide the large clump into several smaller sections, each with its own roots.
- 3 Planting
Plant the individual clumps into the substrate with 2-3 cm spacing for future carpet formation.
Materials needed:
Propagation by runners
- Sufficient CO2 in the aquarium significantly accelerates the spread of runners.
- 1 Runner formation
Allow the plant to grow freely; under good conditions, it will naturally send out underground runners.
- 2 Separation
Once the new daughter plant has developed its own roots and stems, you can cut the connecting runner.
