Ascocentrum Orchid (Ascocentrum)
Ascocentrum
A compact, sun-loving orchid that wants bright light, warm temperatures, high humidity and roots that are watered heavily but dry out fast. Grow it bare-root in a basket or mounted, water when the roots turn silvery, feed weakly every week in the growing season and keep it above 15 C.

What is Ascocentrum orchid?
Ascocentrum orchid (Ascocentrum) is a medium-care plant from the Orchidaceae family. Ascocentrum is a small genus of miniature epiphytic orchids from Southeast Asia and the eastern Himalayas, found from India and southern China through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Java and the Philippines. Ascocentrum orchid grows up to 25cm, spread of 20cm, watering every 2 days, 15ยฐC โ 30ยฐC, 60โ80% humidity. It is suitable for indoor environments and safe for pets.
Unlike many popular species, Ascocentrum orchid is safe to keep around pets. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 7 days.
How to Care for Ascocentrum orchid?
TLDR: Ascocentrum orchid needs Bright indirect, watering every 2 days, and temperatures between 15-30ยฐC with 60-80% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Ascocentrum orchid?
Water thoroughly until the roots turn green, then let them dry and turn silvery-white before watering again. In warm months this can be daily for bare-root or mounted plants; in winter water less often. Use rainwater or low-mineral water and never leave water standing in the leaf axils.
How Much Light Does Ascocentrum orchid Need?
Give strong, bright light similar to a Vanda or Cattleya: an east or south window or a bright greenhouse spot with some morning or late-afternoon sun. Too little light stops flowering, but harsh midday sun through glass can scorch the leaves, so acclimate it gradually.
What Is the Best Soil for Ascocentrum orchid?
Use little or no potting mix. Grow it bare-root in a wooden slat basket, mounted on cork or bark, or in a small pot with very coarse bark and charcoal so the roots get air and dry quickly.
What Pot Should You Use for Ascocentrum orchid?
Small wooden slat basket or cork/bark mount with no substrate; alternatively a small clay pot (8-10 cm) with very coarse bark and charcoal.

What Is Ascocentrum orchid and Where Does It Come From?
Ascocentrum is a small genus of miniature epiphytic orchids from Southeast Asia and the eastern Himalayas, found from India and southern China through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Java and the Philippines. The plants are monopodial: a short upright stem carries two rows of stiff, strap-shaped or channelled leaves and thick aerial roots, usually staying under 25 cm tall. In bloom they produce dense, upright spikes packed with small, waxy flowers about 2 cm across in vivid orange, yellow, red, pink or magenta. Botanists now usually treat Ascocentrum as part of Vanda (for example Ascocentrum miniatum is Vanda miniata, A. ampullaceum is Vanda ampullacea and A. curvifolium is Vanda curvifolia), but growers and labels still widely use the name Ascocentrum. It is a parent of the Ascocenda hybrids (Ascocentrum x Vanda).
How to Propagate Ascocentrum orchid?
Separating basal offshoots (keikis)
Only divide strong, healthy plants and avoid splitting them too often. Mist the roots of the young plant daily until new root tips appear, and do not fertilize for the first few weeks.
- 1 Wait until a side shoot at the base of the plant has at least two or three roots about 5 cm long
- 2 Cut the offshoot away from the mother plant with a sterilized blade, keeping all its roots
- 3 Dust the cut with cinnamon or a fungicide to prevent rot
- 4 Fix the new plant in a small basket or onto a cork mount and keep it in bright, humid conditions

What Diseases Commonly Affect Ascocentrum orchid?
TLDR: Ascocentrum orchid is susceptible to 8 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Scale Insects
Scale insects are small sap-sucking pests that appear as brown, shell-like bumps on plant stems and leaves. There are over 25 species, divided into armored (hard) and unarmored (soft) scales. They feed by piercing plant tissue and extracting sap, which weakens the plant and can lead to yellowing, stunted growth, and even death if left untreated. They also excrete honeydew, which attracts ants and promotes sooty mold growth.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. They are common pests of houseplants and outdoor plants in mild climates. These sap-sucking insects feed on plant tissue, causing damage, stunted growth, and can lead to plant death if left untreated. They produce sticky honeydew which attracts sooty mold.
Thrips
Thrips are tiny cigar-shaped insects (1/25-inch long) that damage plants by sucking plant juices and scraping at fruits, flowers, and leaves. With over 6,000 species and rapid reproduction (lifecycle as short as 14 days), they can quickly infest plants and transmit viruses like tomato spotted wilt virus.
Root Rot
Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.
Meaning & Symbolism
Miniature jewel of the Vanda alliance; its brilliant orange, red and magenta clusters are associated with warmth, vitality and cheerful abundance, and it is a key parent of the popular Ascocenda hybrids.
Fun Facts
Ascocentrum ampullaceum gets its name from the small flask-shaped spur on each flower (ampulla is Latin for flask).
Crossing Ascocentrum with Vanda created the Ascocenda hybrids, which combine Vanda-sized colour with a much more compact plant.
A blooming Ascocentrum miniatum can be only about 12 cm tall yet carry dozens of bright orange flowers on one spike.
