In late spring and summer, it produces small greenish-yellow flowers in clusters, followed by woody fruits surrounded by a disk-shaped wing resembling a small hat, which are green at first and turn brown when ripe. According to tradition, its thorny branches were used to weave the crown of thorns for Jesus, which is the origin of its common name.
