Polytrichaceae
Common Haircap Moss: Ground Cover Plant
Polytrichum commune
This moisture-loving moss thrives in acidic, nutrient-poor soil. It should be kept consistently moist and tolerates a wide range of light conditions, from partial shade to full sun. It can also be kept in closed terrariums or moss walls, where its height makes it suitable as a small plant. It does not require fertilization, pruning, or repotting.

What is Common Haircap Moss?
Common Haircap Moss (Polytrichum commune) is a medium-care plant from the Polytrichaceae family. Common haircap moss (Polytrichum commune) is a leafy moss belonging to the Polytrichaceae family, and it is the largest moss species in Europe. Its straight, sparsely branched stems grow 10β40 cm tall, forming a dense, deep turf of dark green to bluish-green. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves, 8β12 mm...
Common Haircap Moss grows up to 40cm, watering every 3 days, 10Β°C β 25Β°C, 50β80% humidity. It is suitable for indoor environments and safe for pets.
Unlike many popular species, Common Haircap Moss is safe to keep around pets. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 7 days.
How to Care for Common Haircap Moss?
TLDR: Common Haircap Moss needs Partial shade, watering every 3 days, and temperatures between 10-25Β°C with 50-80% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Common Haircap Moss?
Keep the soil consistently moist; do not let it dry out. Preferably use rainwater or distilled water. If the leaves lie flat against the stem and become wavy, the moss is thirsty: they will spread out again when wet.
How Much Light Does Common Haircap Moss Need?
It tolerates more sun than most mosses: it thrives in full sun to partial shade. Indoors, provide medium to strong, indirect light, and avoid direct, dry sunlight behind glass.
What Is the Best Soil for Common Haircap Moss?
It prefers an acidic, nutrient-poor medium: peat, sandy, or gravelly soil. It spreads faster on peat. Avoid calcareous soil and fertilizers.
What Pot Should You Use for Common Haircap Moss?
Closed or semi-closed glass terrarium, or a shallow, draining dish with a moisture-retaining, peaty substrate. The glass helps maintain 50β80% humidity.
What Is Common Haircap Moss and Where Does It Come From?
Common haircap moss (Polytrichum commune) is a leafy moss belonging to the Polytrichaceae family, and it is the largest moss species in Europe. Its straight, sparsely branched stems grow 10β40 cm tall, forming a dense, deep turf of dark green to bluish-green. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves, 8β12 mm long, are spirally arranged on the stem: when dry, they lie close to the stem; when wet, they spread out, and their edges are strongly toothed. The upper surface of the leaves features tiny lamellae, which help retain water. It is a dioecious species, with four-sided, yellow or reddish-brown spore capsules developing on a 12β20 cm stalk on female plants in summer. The capsule is covered by a shiny, golden-yellow hairy calyptra, from which it gets its name. It occurs on all continents except Antarctica, up to an altitude of 2000 m. It thrives in moist, acidic pine forests, bogs, wet heaths, and stream banks. In Hungary, it is found in moist, boggy areas of the central mountains and the Transdanubian hills and is not endangered. In the Middle Ages, its strong stems were woven into ropes.
How to Propagate Common Haircap Moss?
Division
The fibrous base holds the clump together, so gather the stems when cutting. Water with rainwater and do not let it dry out in the first few weeks.
- 1 Select a healthy, dense moss cushion.
- 2 Using sharp scissors, cut a piece from it, including the lower, fibrous rhizoid layer.
- 3 Keep the piece intact, as the stems will fall apart without the rhizoids.
- 4 Press it onto a moist, acidic, peaty substrate and keep it continuously moist until it establishes.

Spore Propagation
This is a natural process that is difficult to control at home. In practice, division is much more reliable.
- 1 Four-sided spore capsules mature on female plants in summer.
- 2 From the mature capsules, the wind disperses the spores onto moist, acidic soil.
- 3 The spores develop into filamentous protonemata, and then into new moss plants.
