What is Espostoa guentheri?

Espostoa guentheri (Espostoa guentheri) is a medium-care plant from the Cactaceae family. Espostoa guentheri, also sold as Vatricania guentheri, is a columnar cactus endemic to eastern Bolivia, in the Rรญo Grande valley, where it grows on dry-forest slopes at 800 to 1,300 m. It forms pale green columns up to 2 or 3 m tall and about 10 cm across, with around 27 ribs and straw-yellow spines...

Espostoa guentheri grows up to 3.0m, spread of 60cm, watering every 10 days, 10ยฐC โ€“ 30ยฐC. It is suitable for indoor environments and safe for pets.

Unlike many popular species, Espostoa guentheri is safe to keep around pets. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 20 days.

How to Care for Espostoa guentheri?

TLDR: Espostoa guentheri needs Direct sun, watering every 10 days, and temperatures between 10-30ยฐC with 40-70% humidity.

๐Ÿ’ง

How Often Should You Water Espostoa guentheri?

In the growing season, water deeply when the mix is completely dry, usually about every 10 days; it takes a little more water than most cacti. In winter, almost none. Standing water in cold weather rots the base.

โ˜€๏ธ

How Much Light Does Espostoa guentheri Need?

Full sun, as much as possible. Indoors, the sunniest window; in low light new growth comes out thin and leaning. Move it into direct sun gradually to avoid scorch.

๐Ÿชด

What Is the Best Soil for Espostoa guentheri?

A coarse, mineral cactus mix with grit, pumice or coarse sand that drains instantly.

๐Ÿบ

What Pot Should You Use for Espostoa guentheri?

A terracotta pot with a drainage hole. Move up a size when roots fill the pot; if the column gets top-heavy first, use a heavier pot rather than a bigger one.

What Is Espostoa guentheri and Where Does It Come From?

Espostoa guentheri, also sold as Vatricania guentheri, is a columnar cactus endemic to eastern Bolivia, in the Rรญo Grande valley, where it grows on dry-forest slopes at 800 to 1,300 m. It forms pale green columns up to 2 or 3 m tall and about 10 cm across, with around 27 ribs and straw-yellow spines, and branches from the base with age. What sets it apart is the lateral cephalium: a band of reddish-brown wool and bristles up to 50 cm long that grows on one side of the stem and bears the flowers. The flowers are tubular, yellowish to whitish, and open in early summer. The fruits are edible but bland. It is a different species from Espostoa lanata, the Peruvian old man cactus.

How to Propagate Espostoa guentheri?

๐ŸŒฑ

Side-branch cuttings

Hold the branch with tongs or folded newspaper to avoid the spines.

  1. 1
Cut a side branch at its base with a clean knife
  2. 2
Let the cut dry in shade until callused, about 7 to 14 days
  3. 3
Plant it in dry mineral mix, propped up so it stands straight
  4. 4
Start watering lightly after one to two weeks

Seed

Seedlings grow slowly; wait a few months before pricking them out.

  1. 1
Scatter seed on fine, free-draining mix without burying it
  2. 2
Cover the pot to keep humidity high
  3. 3
Keep it warm and bright, out of strong direct sun
  4. 4
    Uncover gradually once seedlings appear

What Diseases Commonly Affect Espostoa guentheri?

TLDR: Espostoa guentheri is susceptible to 4 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.

Mealybugs

High

Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. They are common pests of houseplants and outdoor plants in mild climates. These sap-sucking insects feed on plant tissue, causing damage, stunted growth, and can lead to plant death if left untreated. They produce sticky honeydew which attracts sooty mold.

Scale Insects

Medium

Scale insects are small sap-sucking pests that appear as brown, shell-like bumps on plant stems and leaves. There are over 25 species, divided into armored (hard) and unarmored (soft) scales. They feed by piercing plant tissue and extracting sap, which weakens the plant and can lead to yellowing, stunted growth, and even death if left untreated. They also excrete honeydew, which attracts ants and promotes sooty mold growth.

Root Rot

High

Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.

Sunburn (Sun Scorch)

Medium

Sunburn or sun scorch is an environmental condition that occurs when plants are exposed to intense, direct sunlight beyond their tolerance level. This causes the breakdown of chlorophyll in the leaves, resulting in bleached, dried, and damaged foliage. The damage can happen rapidly, sometimes within just a few hours of exposure.

Frequently asked questions

Are Vatricania guentheri and Espostoa guentheri the same plant?
Yes. Vatricania guentheri is the older name; the species is now treated as Espostoa guentheri. Do not confuse it with Espostoa lanata, a different species from Peru.
What is the red wool on one side of the stem?
It is the cephalium, a band of wool and bristles that forms on mature plants and produces the flowers and fruit.
How often should I water Espostoa guentheri?
When the mix is completely dry, usually about every 10 days in warm weather, and hardly at all in winter.
What pests attack Espostoa guentheri?
Mealybugs and scale, which hide in the wool. Too much water in cold weather rots the base.
