Pandanaceae
Freycinetia (genus Freycinetia)
Freycinetia
A humid-tropics plant of moderate difficulty: filtered light or part shade, moderate watering with the mix drying slightly between waterings, warmth (nights above 15 °C) and high humidity. It needs a tree trunk, moss pole or wall to climb. It grows slowly. Wear gloves when handling, as the leaf edges are spiny.

How to Care for Freycinetia (genus)?
TLDR: Freycinetia (genus) needs Partial shade, watering every 7 days, and temperatures between 15-30°C with 40-70% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Freycinetia (genus)?
Water moderately: water when the top layer of the mix is dry, usually about once a week in warm weather and less in cool weather. Do not let it sit waterlogged.
How Much Light Does Freycinetia (genus) Need?
Part shade or bright filtered light, as under a tree canopy. Some species take more sun if humidity is high; strong direct sun scorches shade-grown plants.
What Is the Best Soil for Freycinetia (genus)?
A light, humus-rich, well-drained mix that holds some moisture without staying soggy.
What Pot Should You Use for Freycinetia (genus)?
A medium pot with good drainage holes and a moss pole or sturdy stake for the plant to climb.
What Is Freycinetia (genus) and Where Does It Come From?
Freycinetia is a genus of about 300 species of woody climbers in the screwpine family (Pandanaceae), ranging from Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and the Pacific islands, in humid forests from the coast up to cloud forest. They climb tree trunks with aerial roots that grow from the nodes, and without support they sprawl over the ground in tangles. The long, narrow leaves, spiralled at the branch tips, look like those of a miniature pandanus and have fine spines along the edges. Plants are either male or female, and the flower clusters are surrounded by colourful bracts: orange-salmon in Hawaii's ʻieʻie (F. arborea), white and edible in New Zealand's kiekie (F. banksii), and red to pink in cultivated species such as F. multiflora and F. cumingiana. Kiekie stems can exceed 30 m in the forest.
How to Propagate Freycinetia (genus)?
Stem cuttings
Basal cuttings root more heavily than tip cuttings. The plant grows slowly, so it can take a while to produce side shoots worth cutting.
- 1 Take 8-10 cm cuttings, preferably from the base of a branch, with at least one node
- 2 Dip the base in rooting hormone (IBA or NAA)
- 3 Insert in a light, moist mix
- 4 Keep warm, humid and in part shade until rooted
