Guaitecas cypress: Complete Care Guide
Pilgerodendron uviferum
An outdoor tree for cool, rainy climates. It requires acidic, moist, and nutrient-poor soil—ideally peaty—that never dries out completely, and prefers a sheltered location. It withstands frosts down to approximately -12 °C (USDA zones 8 to 9). It grows very slowly, reaching 4.5 to 6 m in about 20 years in garden settings. It is not suitable as a houseplant. As a protected species, ensure you only purchase plants from legal nurseries.

How to Care for Guaitecas cypress?
TLDR: Guaitecas cypress needs Bright indirect, watering every 4 days, and temperatures between -12-30°C with 40-70% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Guaitecas cypress?
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first few years and in summer; in its natural habitat, it receives up to 3 m of rain per year. Once established, it can tolerate some drought, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely. Use rainwater if your tap water is very hard or calcareous.
How Much Light Does Guaitecas cypress Need?
Prefers full sun or bright partial shade. In nature, it grows in open peat bogs and forests; in gardens, it performs best in sites sheltered from strong winds.
What Is the Best Soil for Guaitecas cypress?
Acidic, nutrient-poor, and moist soil; it tolerates waterlogging better than almost any other conifer. A mixture of peat or decomposed leaf mold with some sand works well. Avoid calcareous or alkaline soils.
What Pot Should You Use for Guaitecas cypress?
Best planted directly in the ground. When young, it can live for a few years in a large, deep pot with an acidic and moist mix; plastic or glazed ceramic pots retain moisture better than terracotta.
What Is Guaitecas cypress and Where Does It Come From?
The Guaitecas cypress (Pilgerodendron uviferum) is the southernmost conifer in the world, growing in southern Chile and southwestern Argentina, from near Valdivia (about 40° S) to Tierra del Fuego (54° S). It is the only species in its genus, though many botanists include it in Libocedrus. It is an evergreen tree with a narrow, conical crown, reaching 2 to 20 m in height with a trunk up to 1.5 m in diameter, featuring reddish-brown bark that peels in grayish strips. Its leaves are tiny scales, less than 1 cm long, arranged in crossed pairs so that the branchlets appear square. It is dioecious, with separate male and female trees producing cones of 5 to 12 mm. It inhabits peat bogs, wetlands, and humid forests of the coast and the Andes, thriving in acidic, nutrient-poor, and waterlogged soils where it often forms nearly pure stands. It is very slow-growing and long-lived. Its aromatic, reddish-yellow wood is nearly rot-proof and was historically used for railway sleepers, boats, oars, and houses; however, exploitation, fires, and livestock have reduced its population. It is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN and protected under CITES Appendix I.
How to Propagate Guaitecas cypress?
Seeds
Since it is dioecious, only female trees produce seeds. The species is protected: do not collect from wild areas without permission.
- 1 Collect mature cones from a female tree (each cone contains a few winged seeds).
- 2 Sow the seeds shallowly in an acidic, moist, and well-aerated mixture.
- 3 Keep the tray cool and moist with indirect light.
- 4 Transplant seedlings carefully when they are a few centimeters tall; they grow very slowly.
