What Is Guiana Rapanea and Where Does It Come From?
The Guiana Rapanea (Myrsine guianensis) is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to coastal areas, moist forests, and dry forests ranging from South Florida and the West Indies to Brazil and northern Argentina, including much of Colombia from sea level to nearly 3,300 meters in altitude. Its leaves are alternate, oblong-elliptic, 7 to 20 cm long, glossy bright green on the upper surface and paler underneath. The trunk typically branches in a candelabra shape, featuring reddish bark and long, flexible, nearly horizontal branches. It produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers, followed by drupe fruits that ripen to a shiny black and are highly prized by birds. It is a very resilient species, capable of growing rapidly even in poor, eroded, or poorly drained soils.
How to Propagate Guiana Rapanea?
Seed Propagation
- Germination can be slow and irregular; be patient.
- Both male and female plants are needed nearby to obtain viable fruits from adult specimens.
- 1 Collect the seeds
Collect ripe black fruits directly from the tree or the ground and separate the pulp from the seed by washing it with water.
- 2 Prepare the substrate
Sow the clean seeds in a light, well-drained mix, barely covering them with a thin layer of substrate.
- 3 Maintain moisture
Keep the substrate uniformly moist and in a partially shaded spot until the seedlings germinate.
- 4 Transplant
When the seedlings reach several centimeters and have several true leaves, transplant them into individual containers or to their permanent location.
