In summer (July–August), it blooms with creamy-white, lightly fragrant flowers in long panicles that are highly attractive to bees. Due to its resistance to drought, urban pollution, and frost (zones 4a–8b), it is frequently planted as a street and park tree. Because of its slow, resilient growth, thick bark, and ability to form aged, sculptural trunks, it is a popular species for bonsai.
