What Is Mistletoes and Where Does It Come From?

Viscum is the mistletoe genus, with about 112 species of hemiparasitic shrubs in the sandalwood family (Santalaceae), native to Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia. Frequently asked questions

Does mistletoe harm the tree?
A few clumps do little harm, but large colonies can seriously weaken the host tree. Cut back the excess if the tree is struggling.
Is mistletoe poisonous?
Yes. The berries and leaves contain lectins such as viscumin and cause stomach pain, diarrhea and a weak pulse. Keep it away from children, dogs and cats and wear gloves when handling it.
Can I grow mistletoe in a pot?
No. Mistletoe is a hemiparasite and only grows on living branches of a host tree, such as apple, lime or poplar.
Why does my mistletoe flower but not set berries?
There are male and female plants. If yours is male, or there is no male nearby, there will be no berries. Sow more seeds on the same branch.
