One source takes the opposite stance. University of Illinois Report RPD 653 from 1988 recommends bottom watering and keeping moisture on the lean side. In practice, that means waiting longer than standard finger tests suggest, letting the soil dry out a bit more than usual. This advice appears under guidance for controlling Phytophthora stem rot. The pathogen thrives in soggy conditions, and bottom watering keeps moisture away from the sensitive stem base.

That leaves two practical reasons to try bottom watering. It is also helpful if your plant has previously lost stems to rot. In all other situations, top watering is the better choice.
