What Is Narrowleaf Oregon Grape and Where Does It Come From?
Berberis eurybracteata, long sold under its former name Mahonia eurybracteata, is an evergreen shrub of the barberry family native to China. It forms an upright, clumping habit with graceful, glossy dark green pinnate leaves made up of slender leaflets. In late summer and autumn it carries erect spires of small, fragrant yellow flowers, which are followed by blue-black berries. The popular cultivar Soft Caress stays compact at roughly 1.2 m in height and spread, and its leaflets are narrow and largely spine-free, so it is much easier to handle than typical mahonias. It gives a fine, architectural texture in shady borders, woodland gardens and containers, and it is valued for late-season colour when few other shrubs are in flower.
How to Propagate Narrowleaf Oregon Grape?
Seed sowing
Fresh seed germinates best, and cultivars will not come true from seed.
- 1 Collect ripe berries in autumn and clean the seed from the pulp.
- 2 Sow in pots of moist, free-draining seed compost.
- 3 Leave the pots outdoors over winter so the seed gets a natural cold period.
- 4 Keep the compost moist and prick out seedlings when large enough to handle.
Materials needed:
Semi-ripe cuttings
This is the usual way to increase named cultivars.
- 1 Take 10-15 cm semi-ripe stem cuttings in late summer.
- 2 Remove the lower leaves and halve any large leaves.
- 3 Dip the base in rooting hormone and insert into gritty compost.
- 4 Keep in a cool, bright, humid spot until rooted.

What Diseases Commonly Affect Narrowleaf Oregon Grape?
TLDR: Narrowleaf Oregon Grape is susceptible to 4 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Leaf Spot
Leaf spot is a common fungal disease caused by various pathogens including Alternaria, Ascochyta, Colletotrichum, Septoria, and Venturia. It primarily affects leaves, causing discolored spots that can lead to premature leaf drop if left untreated.
Powdery Mildew
Powdery mildew is a common fungal disease caused by various fungi species including Erysiphe, Podosphaera, Oรฏdium, and Leveillula. It affects over 10,000 plant species worldwide. The disease thrives in warm, dry climates with high humidity and appears as a distinctive white powdery coating on plant surfaces.
Rust
Rust is a common fungal disease caused by fungi in the order Pucciniales that affects a wide variety of plants. The disease gets its name from the characteristic orange, yellow, or reddish-brown pustules that appear on leaves, resembling metal rust. This obligate fungal parasite requires living plants to survive and can cause significant economic losses in agricultural crops.
Root Rot
Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.
