Echinocactus
Full sun, very free-draining mix and little water: let it dry out completely between waterings and keep it dry in winter. It takes only light, brief frost (about -1 Β°C) and only when dry. Rot from overwatering is the main risk.

What is Echinocactus Barrel Cactus?
Echinocactus Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus) is a easy-care plant from the Cactaceae family. Echinocactus is a genus of barrel cacti from Mexico and the southwestern United States. They are round to barrel-shaped cacti with strong ribs and many stout spines; the name is Greek for "spiny cactus". Only a few species are accepted today, such as the giant barrel cactus (Echinocactus platyacanth...
Echinocactus Barrel Cactus grows up to 2.0m, spread of 100cm, watering every 14 days. It is suitable for indoor environments and safe for pets.
Unlike many tropical plants, Echinocactus Barrel Cactus tolerates watering mistakes. Best for beginners. Unlike many popular species, Echinocactus Barrel Cactus is safe to keep around pets. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 28 days.
How to Care for Echinocactus Barrel Cactus?
TLDR: Echinocactus Barrel Cactus needs Direct sun, watering every 14 days, and temperatures between -1-30Β°C with 40-70% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Echinocactus Barrel Cactus?
In spring and summer, water deeply and wait until the mix is completely dry before watering again, usually about every 2 weeks depending on heat. In winter, while dormant, do not water. Water sitting around the roots or base rots the plant.
How Much Light Does Echinocactus Barrel Cactus Need?
Needs full sun for several hours a day; indoors, your sunniest window. Acclimatise nursery plants to strong sun gradually to avoid scorching.
What Is the Best Soil for Echinocactus Barrel Cactus?
A coarse, fast-draining cactus mix with plenty of grit, coarse sand or pumice and little organic matter. Wet, compacted soil causes crown rot.
What Pot Should You Use for Echinocactus Barrel Cactus?
A terracotta pot with drainage holes, slightly wider than the plant. The roots are fragile: repot only when it truly outgrows the pot, using thick gloves or folded cardboard.

What Is Echinocactus Barrel Cactus and Where Does It Come From?
Echinocactus is a genus of barrel cacti from Mexico and the southwestern United States. They are round to barrel-shaped cacti with strong ribs and many stout spines; the name is Greek for "spiny cactus". Only a few species are accepted today, such as the giant barrel cactus (Echinocactus platyacanthus), which reaches 2 m tall and 1 m across, and the small E. horizonthalonius. The famous golden barrel cactus (E. grusonii) was long placed here and is still widely sold under that name, though it is now treated as Kroenleinia grusonii. Yellow flowers open in a ring at the crown of mature plants in summer, and the fruits are hidden in dense white wool. Growth is very slow. In Mexico the pith of the giant barrel is boiled with sugar into acitrΓ³n candy, and overcollection threatens wild populations.
How to Propagate Echinocactus Barrel Cactus?
Seed
Seed is practically the only way to propagate, as they rarely make offsets. Growth is very slow, so be patient.
- 1 Scatter seeds on fine, moist cactus mix without burying them
- 2 Cover with clear plastic to keep humidity in
- 3 Keep somewhere bright and warm, out of harsh direct sun
- 4 Once seedlings are established, remove the cover gradually
- 5 Transplant only after one or two years, handling the roots gently

What Diseases Commonly Affect Echinocactus Barrel Cactus?
TLDR: Echinocactus Barrel Cactus is susceptible to 7 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Root Rot
Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.
Overwatering
Overwatering occurs when plants receive too much water, depriving roots of oxygen and causing root rot. This environmental stress is one of the most common causes of houseplant death, as waterlogged soil prevents roots from breathing and functioning properly.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. They are common pests of houseplants and outdoor plants in mild climates. These sap-sucking insects feed on plant tissue, causing damage, stunted growth, and can lead to plant death if left untreated. They produce sticky honeydew which attracts sooty mold.
Spider Mites
Spider mites are tiny arachnids (less than 1/20 inch long) related to spiders and ticks that feed on plant sap. They thrive in hot, dry conditions and can cause significant damage to ornamental and vegetable plants. During severe infestations, crop losses can reach 14% or higher as these pests disrupt vital plant processes including photosynthesis, carbon dioxide absorption, and transpiration.
Fun Facts
The name Echinocactus comes from Greek and means "spiny cactus".
The giant barrel cactus can top 2 m and takes decades to reach adult size.
The wool from the fruits was once used as stuffing and in weaving.
