Kolbii air plant grows up to 12cm, spread of 10cm, watering every 7 days, 10ยฐC โ 32ยฐC, 60โ70% humidity. It is suitable for indoor environments and safe for pets.
Unlike many tropical plants, Kolbii air plant tolerates watering mistakes. Best for beginners. Unlike many popular species, Kolbii air plant is safe to keep around pets. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 14 days.
How to Care for Kolbii air plant?
TLDR: Kolbii air plant needs Partial shade, watering every 7 days, and temperatures between 10-32ยฐC with 60-70% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Kolbii air plant?
Soak the plant in chlorine-free water (rain, filtered or left to stand) for 20-30 minutes once a week; in hot, dry weather every 2-3 days or mist between soaks. Shake it off and dry it upside down: water trapped in the center rots the plant.
How Much Light Does Kolbii air plant Need?
Bright, indirect light near a window; a little morning sun is fine, but strong direct sun scorches the leaves.
What Is the Best Soil for Kolbii air plant?
No growing medium: the roots only anchor it. Use wood, cork, stone or wire mounts, never wet soil or soggy moss.

What Is Kolbii air plant and Where Does It Come From?
Tillandsia kolbii is an air plant (epiphytic bromeliad) native to Oaxaca and Chiapas in Mexico and to Guatemala, where it clings to trees and rocks at altitude. It forms a small, compact, upright rosette 6-12 cm tall of narrow, slightly curved leaves covered in silvery scales (trichomes) that give it a grey-green tone. At bloom time the central leaves blush red and purple tubular flowers appear. It was long sold as Tillandsia ionantha var. scaposa, a name now treated as a synonym.
How to Propagate Kolbii air plant?
Separating pups
The mother produces pups after flowering. Left together they form an attractive clump.
- 1 Wait until the pup is one third to half the size of the mother
- 2 Hold both at the base and gently twist apart
- 3 If firmly attached, cut close to the mother with clean scissors
- 4 Care for the pup like an adult plant

What Diseases Commonly Affect Kolbii air plant?
TLDR: Kolbii air plant is susceptible to 5 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Crown Rot
Crown rot is a serious fungal disease that attacks the crown (base) of the plant where the stem meets the soil. It is caused by various fungal pathogens including Phytophthora, Fusarium, and Rhizoctonia. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions and can quickly spread to kill the entire plant if not addressed promptly.
Underwatering
Underwatering or drought stress is a physiological disorder that occurs when the amount of water a plant loses through transpiration exceeds the amount its roots can absorb from the soil. This leads to cellular dehydration and various visible symptoms that can compromise plant health and productivity.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. They are common pests of houseplants and outdoor plants in mild climates. These sap-sucking insects feed on plant tissue, causing damage, stunted growth, and can lead to plant death if left untreated. They produce sticky honeydew which attracts sooty mold.
Scale Insects
Scale insects are small sap-sucking pests that appear as brown, shell-like bumps on plant stems and leaves. There are over 25 species, divided into armored (hard) and unarmored (soft) scales. They feed by piercing plant tissue and extracting sap, which weakens the plant and can lead to yellowing, stunted growth, and even death if left untreated. They also excrete honeydew, which attracts ants and promotes sooty mold growth.
Fun Facts
It takes up water and nutrients through the silvery scales on its leaves, not its roots.
The central leaves blush red when it is about to bloom.
Each rosette flowers only once, then multiplies by pups.
