How to Care for Monstrose Eve's Needle Cactus?

What Is Monstrose Eve's Needle Cactus and Where Does It Come From?
This is the monstrose form of Eve's needle cactus (Austrocylindropuntia subulata), a cactus from the Peruvian Andes. A mutation makes the plant grow in a disorderly way: instead of a few smooth cylindrical branches, it puts up many upright green stems crowded with short knobby offshoots, which gives the clump the outline of a small fir tree. That is why it is sold as Christmas tree cactus. The fleshy little leaves typical of this group are shorter than on the species, up to 5 cm, and can be green, yellow, red or pink. Spines are missing or few, thin and pale, up to 1.5 cm. It stays smaller than the normal form, usually 1 to 2 metres in a pot, and bears red flowers and fruit in spring and summer.
How to Propagate Monstrose Eve's Needle Cactus?
Branch cutting
Pieces that fall and touch the soil root on their own within a few weeks. Pick branches that show the monstrose shape, because some shoots revert to the smooth species form.
- 1 Cut a branch or offshoot with a clean knife, wearing gloves

What Diseases Commonly Affect Monstrose Eve's Needle Cactus?
TLDR: Monstrose Eve's Needle Cactus is susceptible to 5 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Root Rot
Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. They are common pests of houseplants and outdoor plants in mild climates. These sap-sucking insects feed on plant tissue, causing damage, stunted growth, and can lead to plant death if left untreated. They produce sticky honeydew which attracts sooty mold.
Scale Insects
Scale insects are small sap-sucking pests that appear as brown, shell-like bumps on plant stems and leaves. There are over 25 species, divided into armored (hard) and unarmored (soft) scales. They feed by piercing plant tissue and extracting sap, which weakens the plant and can lead to yellowing, stunted growth, and even death if left untreated. They also excrete honeydew, which attracts ants and promotes sooty mold growth.
Cold Damage
Cold damage, also known as frost injury, occurs when plants are exposed to freezing or near-freezing temperatures. This environmental stress can cause cellular damage as ice crystals form within plant tissues, rupturing cells and disrupting normal plant functions. Chilling injury can also occur in sensitive species at temperatures between 32-55ยฐF (0-10ยฐC), even without actual freezing.
Fun Facts
The nickname Christmas tree cactus comes from the conical, fir-like shape the clump takes on.
Small pieces that drop to the ground root on their own within a few weeks.
In Australia the species is treated as an invasive weed, and New South Wales bans the sale of the whole genus.
