Crown Vetch: Perfect Plant for Beginners
Coronilla valentina
Plant it in full sun, in a sheltered spot, preferably next to a south or west-facing wall. It needs well-drained soil, even if it's poor, stony, or calcareous. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and only needs watering during long dry periods. It can withstand light frosts (around -7 ยฐC, some sources say more); in cold areas, mulch the base in winter. Prune lightly after flowering subsides. It is toxic if ingested: keep it away from children, pets, and horses.

How to Care for Crown Vetch?
TLDR: Crown Vetch needs Bright indirect, watering every 10 days, and temperatures between -7-30ยฐC with 40-70% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Crown Vetch?
Water regularly during the first year until it establishes. Afterward, watering during prolonged droughts is sufficient, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. In pots, water when the top few centimeters of the substrate are dry and do not leave water in the saucer: waterlogging will rot the roots.
How Much Light Does Crown Vetch Need?
Full sun in temperate and oceanic climates; in very hot Mediterranean areas, it tolerates some shade. With too little light, it flowers less and becomes leggy.
What Is the Best Soil for Crown Vetch?
Well-drained soil, neutral to slightly alkaline. Tolerates poor, sandy, stony, and calcareous soils. If the soil is heavy, mix in gravel when planting.
What Pot Should You Use for Crown Vetch?
A large terracotta pot with good drainage holes and a layer of gravel at the bottom, with substrate lightened with sand or gravel. In winter, in cold areas, place it next to a sunny, sheltered wall.
What Is Crown Vetch and Where Does It Come From?
Coronilla (Coronilla valentina) is a perennial shrub from the legume family, native to the Mediterranean basin, especially Southern Europe and North Africa. It forms a dense, rounded bush 0.8 to 1.5 m tall, with compound leaves made of small, fleshy, bluish-green leaflets, especially in the glauca subspecies. From late winter and throughout spring, it is covered with bright yellow flowers grouped in crowns, with an intense honey scent that is especially noticeable during the day; it often re-blooms in late summer. After the flowers, thin pods appear. It fixes nitrogen in the soil thanks to the nodules on its roots, allowing it to thrive in poor soils. The glauca subspecies and the 'Citrina' variety have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
