Keep in mind that both studies tested wild plants photographed in the field. Hart and his colleagues deliberately excluded "exotic" park and garden plants. Neither study tested potted houseplants like pothos, ZZ plants, or monstera. For indoor plants, these numbers are simply the best public reference we have, rather than a direct measurement.
Interestingly, in that same field study, there were 13 photos that only Google Lens identified correctly, while every single specialized app missed them. Lens is a generalist tool, and its overall score is the trade-off for that breadth.

Toxic plants. This is where mistakes have real-world consequences. The PLOS ONE study included two toxic species and concluded that no app identified them consistently, leading to the explicit warning that they "should not be relied upon to identify toxic species." If there is a flower, photograph the flower. This is the only physical adjustment with a measured, positive impact in both studies.
Focus on one plant part per photo. Shoot a single leaf, one flower, or just the bark. A messy shot of a bush with four different plants tangled together is the easiest way to get wild, incorrect results.
Get close enough to see the veins. The visual AI relies heavily on leaf shapes, textures, and petal patterns.
Use a clean background. Placing a plain sheet of white paper behind a leaf works wonders.
