Yes. Succulents love the sun and absolutely need it. Without strong light, they stretch out, lose their color, and rot much more easily. The catch lies in the type of sun they get.

Almost all succulents want bright light all day long, but direct sun on their leaves for only part of the day. These are two different things, and confusing them is what causes plants to either sunburn or stretch.

Indoors, the Iowa State University extension recommends 10 hours or more of bright indirect light per day. For most species, the minimum is 6 to 8 hours (Iowa State University Extension).

Direct sun hitting the leaves is a different story. It helps in the morning but hurts in the afternoon. A newly purchased plant is at even higher risk: it comes from a nursery or store greenhouse where it never saw full sun, and it can burn over a single weekend.

I read four Brazilian guides on sun and shade succulents to write this article. Three plants appear in both groups at the same time:

This contradiction exists because the words "sun" and "shade" measure two different things at once:

  1. How much total light the spot gets during the day. In this regard, almost all succulents want the same thing: a lot.

  2. Whether direct sunlight hits the leaves, and for how long. This is where succulents vary quite a bit.

A simple example shows just how big the difference is. An Echeveria on a bright, covered patio gets plenty of light and almost no direct sun, and it does incredibly well. The same Echeveria placed ten feet back inside the living room gets very little light and no sun, and it stretches out.

Both situations are often labeled as "partial shade," yet they are complete opposites. That is why we address the two questions separately here: first, how much light, and then, which sun.

How many hours of sun do succulents need

The Iowa State Extension recommends 10 hours or more of bright indirect light per day indoors. For most species, the minimum is 6 to 8 hours.

"Bright indirect light" has a simple definition: it is light strong enough for the plant to cast a sharp shadow, without direct sunlight actually hitting the plant. This is the most important concept in this article, because almost all succulents are highly demanding when it comes to light.

This light drops very quickly as you move away from the glass. The University of Illinois Extension publishes the measurement by window direction and distance. The direction your window faces also matters, and this rule flips depending on where you are in the world. The brightest window is always the one facing the equator. In the Southern Hemisphere, including Brazil, it is the north-facing window; in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the south-facing window.

East and west windows work the same way in both hemispheres. An east window gets morning sun, and a west window gets afternoon sun.

The 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. range is a practical summer reference, not a scientific paper figure. The principle, however, comes from the source: most succulents appreciate protection from the hot afternoon sun and do better in bright indirect light (Iowa State University Extension). Your succulent cannot go straight into full sun

Full sun means direct sunlight hitting the leaves with nothing in the way, for most of the day. None of the four guides I read explain how to transition a plant from the shade to full sun without burning the leaves. Yet, this transition is exactly when most succulents get damaged.

The plant you just bought spent its life in a commercial greenhouse under shade cloth. The one on your bookshelf spent months in low light. In both cases, the leaves currently on the plant were built specifically for that low light.

The Iowa State University Extension points to this sudden change as the main cause of succulent sunburn, and they are direct about the risks:

Never move indoor plants from inside the house directly into full sun. Sunburn, discoloration, and leaf drop can occur. In some species, especially succulents, the damage to fleshy stems and leaves is permanent. (Iowa State University Extension)

The solution is acclimation, which means gradually introducing the plant to its new light level instead of moving it all at once. The same source offers a path: move the plant to full outdoor shade first, and only then increase the light exposure over 10 to 14 days.

In practice, during the intense summer sun, it is safest to stretch this transition over 2 to 3 weeks:

  1. Days 1 to 3: Full shade outdoors, or the brightest spot in the house with zero direct sun. No direct sun on the leaves yet.

  2. Days 4 to 7: 1 hour of early morning sun. The rest of the day in bright shade.

  3. Week 2: 2 to 3 hours of morning sun.

  4. Week 3: 4 hours or more, provided the plant is a sun-loving variety and the leaves show no signs of stress.

  5. When to stop: If pale spots, fading, or midday wilting appear, step back to the previous stage and stay there for another week.

Two common mistakes happen during this process. The first is trying to acclimate a plant in the dead of summer when the sun is at its harshest. In this case, wait it out, or only use sun from before 9 AM.

Three signs that tell you if the light is right

Plants respond to light levels within a few days, and the signs are easy to spot. These three guidelines cover almost every scenario:

Dry, pale spots: Sunburn

Sunburn shows up as brown or beige patches on the leaves or stem. It hits the inner leaves and new growth first because these are the youngest, most tender tissues, rather than the older outer leaves.

The cause is almost always the same: the plant spent some time in low light and was suddenly moved to bright light or direct sun (Iowa State University Extension).

The burned area will never recover. The same source states that dead tissue cannot heal. The sunburned leaf will eventually drop off, and a burned stem will scar over, leaving a permanent mark.

There is no point in waiting for the spot to clear up, nor should you cut the leaf off to speed things up. Simply reduce the light exposure and monitor the new leaves, as they will tell you if the current spot is correct.

Red edges: A sign of bright light, not disease

The light green Echeveria you bought might start turning pink at the tips. Many people assume this is a disease and throw away a perfectly healthy plant.

Darker and more intense color, with compact growth, comes from stronger light, and is exactly what growers look for. In insufficient light, the leaves stretch out and the plant loses its richness of color (UW-Madison Extension).

This pigment change is completely reversible. Move the plant to a spot with less light and the green color will return within a few weeks.

Do not mistake this color change for sunburn. High-light coloration is a pigment distributed along the edges and tips, leaving the leaf firm and smooth. Sunburn is dead tissue, appearing as a flat, irregular patch that is dry to the touch and often sunken.

There is a common misconception built around this: people often say that highly colorful leaves mean a plant is a "sun-loving" species. In reality, strong color simply means the plant is receiving plenty of light right now. The color changes when you move the pot because it responds to its current environment, not just its genetics.

Elongated stems: Not enough light

A stretching stem, widely spaced leaves, and an open rosette instead of a tight one are classic signs of etiolation. Etiolation is distorted growth caused by a lack of light. A quick warning, as this sign is easy to misinterpret. A long stem is a symptom of insufficient light in any succulent, not a natural feature of shade-loving succulents. Choosing a plant based on this look means you are buying a plant that is already struggling.

Which succulents love the sun, and the two that prefer shade

Before listing names, here is a helpful tip. Echeveria, Haworthia, and Gasteria are not individual plants: each of these names represents a genus, which is a group of dozens of closely related plants. Genus names are capitalized and italicized in this article, and this is usually the name you will find on the nursery tag.

The light requirements apply to the entire group. This is why common names (aloe vera, jade, gollum jade) are written in lowercase: they name a specific plant, not the whole genus.

For the vast majority of succulents sold in stores, the rule is simple: bright light all day, direct morning sun. Echeveria, Sedum, Crassula (including jade and gollum jade), Kalanchoe, Aloe, Sempervivum, Graptoveria, and Portulacaria all belong to this group.

The two exceptions you likely have at home come from this exact environment:

  • Haworthia, the zebra succulent. The same source notes that many species in this genus are adapted to partial shade. They recommend an east or west window with only a few hours of direct sun.   • Gasteria, the ox-tongue. The national botanical garden of South Africa, the group's country of origin, publishes a factsheet for each species. Both belong to the same family, Asphodelaceae. Neither is a deep-shade plant: both want strong light, they just do not want intense, direct sun on their leaves.

And the most practical indoor exception:

Instead of memorizing long lists of names, look at the leaves. Thick, waxy leaves with a powdery blue coating or intense colors usually belong to plants adapted to strong sun. These features are their natural defense mechanisms. Thin, soft, translucent, or very dark green leaves usually belong to plants that grow in sheltered spots.

Regardless of the variety, a newly purchased plant is not acclimated. The 2 to 3-week transition process is just as important for an Echeveria as it is for a zebra plant. The only difference is the final light level where each plant stops.

Behind closed glass, heat burns right along with the light

Two plants can receive the exact same amount of light and end up looking completely different, and the difference is the glass window. On an open balcony, air circulates and carries away the heat that builds up on the leaves.

On a closed windowsill in the afternoon, the air stands still and heats up. Fleshy leaves are thick and full of water, meaning they can warm up well past the ambient room temperature.

The damage that appears later looks like sunburn, because that is exactly what it is. The Iowa State extension attributes this damage to intense light on leaves and stems. That is why it recommends partial shade when moving succulents outdoors in the summer (Iowa State University Extension).

Here is a simple test. Touch the glass and the windowsill around 2 PM on a sunny day. If it feels hot to your hand, it is too hot for your plant.

Both solutions are completely free. Move the pot 12 to 20 inches away from the glass: this takes the plant out of the hottest pocket of air while barely affecting the light. Opening the window works even better, as stagnant air is the real culprit.
