What decorative plastic sleeves do to poinsettias

The plastic, cellophane, or metallic foil wrapper hugging your gift pot does much more than catch excess runoff: it sets off a cascading chemical reaction that sheds foliage.

The tight sleeve compresses branches and forces stems straight up, away from their natural horizontal spread. Bending petioles like this forces the plant to pump out ethylene. This natural gas controls fruit ripening and triggers leaf drop.

That 18 °C changes the scale of the problem in Brazil. The number was written for a winter warehouse in the Northern Hemisphere. There, the plant sells at 5 °C, and the packaging barely warms up.

  2. Inspect the saucer or base. Dump any standing puddle immediately and wipe the bottom dry.

  3. Once out of its packaging, place the plant in bright indirect light, between 18 °C and 24 °C. Keep it away from sun-drenched windows and air-conditioning vents.

  4. Do not water on instinct. Poke your finger into the potting mix and add moisture only if the top inch feels dusty and dry.

Overwatering and root rot

Root rot is the most lethal culprit on the list, and understanding how potted plants travel explains why. They spend weeks on garden center racks being doused on set schedules without anyone probing the dirt. They arrive at your house already saturated, sealed inside water-trapping wraps.

The telltale sign that separates overwatering from underwatering is the order of leaf drop. With overwatering, the bottom leaves turn yellow first and fall off while the soil is still moist, and the stem turns soft near the surface. Underwatering: how to tell when it is truly thirsty

True drought will cause leaf drop, but it is actually the rarest issue of the bunch. Plant owners simply tend to overwater. It usually only happens when a tiny pot sits in a warm, breezy room and goes neglected for a week or more.

The symptoms look nothing like epinasty. Under true thirst, the foliage goes limp, soft, and wrinkled, the pot feels featherlight, and the soil shrinks back from the container edges. Under epinasty, the foliage stays leathery and green, strictly pointing downwards.

  • The transition from greenhouse to living room. These plants start life in climate-controlled greenhouses with perfect humidity and constant warmth. Any typical home is an abrupt downgrade, and shedding a few leaves is standard acclimation.

Pick a solid, comfortable location and keep the pot there. Poinsettias hate being moved from room to room, and every relocation costs foliage.

Pests: whiteflies, spider mites, and mealybugs

The whitefly is the number one leaf pest of this species in commercial production. The University of Massachusetts Extension describes it as the species' main leaf pest. It will, as long as the roots are alive. Poinsettia is a perennial shrub: in a Brazilian garden it grows over 2 m tall and lives for years. The leaf that dropped won't return to the branch, but the branch will sprout again.

Expected recovery timelines once you fix the issue:

  • Ethylene stress from sleeves: Bracts flatten out and lift within 2 to 5 days. Dropped leaves won't return, but remaining foliage stays put.

  • Temperature shock or draft trauma: Leaf drop stops within about a week, with brand new bud breaks arriving in 3 to 6 weeks.
